25 sights and places you should visit when you retire, or before with Dr. Richard Benfield

The 25 sights and places you should visit when you retire, or before!

In recent years there have been a multitude of books charting the thousands of places you must see, such as gardens, historic sights, churches or cemeteries, before you die. Let’s consider the thrill of visiting and exploring some of these unique places as you retire, or simply have the inclination to travel at any time.

Dr. Richard Benfield, visitor to over 137 countries, will outline his Top 25 list. He will eschew the obvious and popular (Sistine Chapel, Big Ben, Grand Canyon) and take you on what Robert Frost called the road less travelled; places for adventure and places rarely mentioned in “1000 places you must see.”

Thus, we will see the oldest human-made artifact in the world (800,000 years old), 40,000-year-old Paleolithic Art, the great cathedrals of Europe, majestic mountains, the Panama Canal, gorillas in the mist and much more. Join us for this visually inspiring one-hour journey and get valuable tips for your next big adventure.

Dr. Benfield is the former Chair and Professor of Geography at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut where he taught courses in Human Geography, Plants, Predators and Parks, Russia, The European Union and many of the courses in the department’s tourism track. His current research interests are in biogeography, particularly garden tourism, and the use of tourism as a conservation tool through the great botanic gardens of the world.

But there's a lot more to the story than Einstein's insights into the nature of reality. George focuses on the great scientist's very human qualities, including his sense of humor, his fondness for Jewish jokes, and his trials and tribulations as a family man.

As part of the show, you'll time travel with George on the trajectory of Einstein's life — from lowly patent clerk in a Swiss office to world-class physicist.

Caught up in the crucible of intellectual, artistic, and scientific transformation that defined the city as the cultural capital of Europe, she defies her upbringing and scandalizes both her family and Viennese society by becoming the muse and model for a brilliant young Expressionist artist.
When challenged to create art herself rather than continue as the object of someone else’s vision, she is driven to reinvent herself as an artist in her own right.
A story of art, passion, and the will to create.

Linda Cardillo is an award-winning author of historical fiction and historical romance. She writes about the old country and the new, the tangle and embrace of family, and finding courage in the midst of loss.

The past 40 years have seen major breakthroughs in our understanding of plant and soil biology. This science is so new that the ink’s still wet on the papers and certainly hasn’t made it into high school textbooks yet. Discover what recent research tells us about how plants get their nutrients and fight diseases and the role microscopic allies play, and learn how a microscope can help you leverage this new science in your own garden and yard.

After the discussion, Nina and Paul will do a live demonstration with their digital microscope and some of their own compost. Bring samples of your own turf, garden soil, or compost so we can compare and analyze soil life up close together!

Paul and Nina Lukens have been digging in the dirt together for nearly 40 years, gardening together for nearly 20, and working their land together for 10, all while juggling off-farm work and homeschooling their five kids. They love what they do.

The Windsor Locks Canal: Yankee Enterprise & Irish Muscle with J. Christopher Kervick

The Windsor Locks Canal, Yankee Enterprise and Irish Muscle

Kervick’s compelling new book touches all the bases in the making of classic history. It is the story of human enterprise, ambition, invention, raw manpower, and the clash of cultures. This uniquely American accomplishment could not have happened without the unlikely convergence of three social and economic groups, including the wealthy merchants who conceived and promoted the canal, the brilliant young civil engineers who designed it, and the over four hundred Irish immigrant laborers who toiled from dawn to dusk in often lethal conditions to forge a better life in America. The synergy of these distinct forces created the backbone of Connecticut’s first planned, water-powered industrial center, one that remains profitable to this day.

Kervick skillfully reveals the story of Connecticut’s bold actions to retain its social and economic prominence as a leader of the industrial revolution. The ripple from this ambitious economic undertaking permanently expanded Connecticut’s ethnic and religious demographics. The book also demonstrates how the longstanding and fierce rivalry between Hartford and New Haven almost doomed the project from its inception.

The Windsor Locks Canal, Yankee Enterprise and Irish Muscle is about people as much it is about events. Not only does Kervick tell the story of the Windsor Locks Canal in far greater detail than it has been told before, but he humanizes the Irish Canal laborers along the way. In many instances, he introduces the reader to these remarkable men by name, the result of over 20 years of painstaking research to answer the basic question, “Who are these unknown laborers to whom we owe so much?”

J. Christopher Kervick is an instructor of local history at Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut. He recently completed three terms as First Selectman of his hometown of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, and, prior to that, served as a Connecticut Judge of Probate. He has been practicing law for over 36 years. A 1984 graduate of Fordham University, he is a 1987 graduate of Catholic University, Columbus School of Law.

His boyhood home was just three hundred yards west of the Windsor Locks Canal (originally known as the Enfield Falls Canal). In 2001, the State of Connecticut hired him to conduct a title search of the entire canal. The title search sparked his fascination with the story behind the canal, especially the plight of the over four hundred unidentified Irish immigrant laborers who built the canal, some of whom lost their lives in the effort.
